The NFT Smart Contract, Explained
A plain-English explainer on NFT smart contracts: what they record, how token standards work and how to read one before you buy.
Behind every NFT is a small program on a blockchain. It decides who holds each token, who can move it and where its description lives. Most buyers never look at it. We think you should, and we show you how in plain language.
What the contract actually does
Keeps a ledger
It maps each token ID to the address that holds it.
Moves tokens
It runs transfers and checks who is allowed to make them.
Points to metadata
It returns a link describing each token: name, image, traits.
That is the core. Everything else, from royalties to pausing, is extra code the project chose to add.
Read before you buy
Verified code
Can you see the source at all?
Who controls it
One wallet, many signers or nobody?
What can change
Upgrades, pauses and metadata edits.
Where data lives
On-chain, IPFS or an ordinary server.
